Interview: Diana Nixon, author of Love Lines

Wednesday, September 26, 2012
I am starting to enjoy this: asking some of my favorite authors questions and them being so nice to answer them. This time Diana Nixon accepted to take part on a little interview and I am so happy to have her here on my blog. I loved Love Lines, the first book in the series, it was one of the best books I've read lately, and now I'm anxiously waiting for the next installment.

So here is my review of Love Lines and don't worry there aren't any spoilers.

Thank you, Diana for accepting the invitation to my interview.

AB: So, tell us a little bit about you and about the Love Lines series.
DN: I was born in Minsk, Belarus, where I still live together with my husband and my little daughter. I’m a lawyer by profession. Before becoming a writer I received a Master of law degree from Belorussian state university and published a few different articles about family law and international marriages. When I wrote my first book I realized how much I like the result and decided to write a whole series of fantasy novels. The first book of Love lines’ series was published in March, 29 and now it has many different editions both in Russian and English languages, in Paperback and Kindle formats. Love lines is a story about a young girl, Eileen Clark whose life turns upside down when she finds out about her supernatural talents and about the existence of a father, whom she hasn’t seen for ages. The story has everything that the readers of paranormal romance would like to find in a book: mysteries, adventures, love and magic spells.

AB: When did you realize that you want to be an author and what was your first non-published creation?
DN: I started writing about a year ago, when after reading dozens of fantasy stories I suddenly wanted to create something too. I imagined a world of people possessing various supernatural gifts and tried to mirror my magical world on paper. I hope I’ve succeeded:) Love lines novel was my first book. It was originally written in Russian and published in one of the online journal for non-published authors. Later it was translated into English and published in the US.

AB: What made you write about Eileen and Christian and about their unique relation?
DN: I like good love stories. I wanted their story to be unique, to have something that no one has ever had. Then I came up with the idea of bonding them by the magical ties that would reflect their love in the fiery tattoos, revealing their feeling and emotions to each other. I wanted Eileen and Christian to feel something so much more than just an attraction, I wanted them to learn how to feel each other even at a distance, how to protect what they shared and always be there for each other.

AB: I know that is hard and all of the characters are like an author’s children but which of the characters would you describe as being your favorite and why?
DN: My favorite character is Evan Murray. Yes, not Christian and not even Eileen:) Evan compares everything that I would never do or say myself. Though he’s a good guy, of course; he’s smart, handsome and funny. He can be everyone’s best friend or worst enemy. It’s better not to hurt those he loves, because Evan is a person who will never let anything happen to the people he cares about. He’s always ready to sacrifice his own life just so save his friends. He knows what true love means, but he also knows how cruel hate can be. Destiny is not always fair to him, but he never gives up, he knows what he wants and won’t stop at anything to reach his goals. His main quality is courage. He doesn’t know what fear means and even if he’s scared he would never admit it, he will close his eye, take a deep breath a finish whatever he’s doing. He’s a highly committed person; everything he does he does excellently. That’s why I hope that one day he will succeed in love and become finally happy.

AB: In Love Lines you have an entire new world with unique legends and history of its own. What inspired you to write about them?
DN: My life in my inspiration. Everything I see around me inspires me to create something new. I want my books to be recognizable and I want my readers to love them. That’s why I try to invent something that would attract attention. Every dialog and every scene I build up in my head, so when someone says that my book is good it means that my imagination works well:)

AB: One of the many things I liked in the book was the fact that flowers seemed to be everywhere with special meanings and different uses. Could you tell us one flower which describes every character in your book?
DN: Hmm, and it’s a good idea to describe them with the help flowers!:) Well, let’s try. So Christian. I would give him a dahlia, as a symbol of dignity, style and devotion; an orchid flower to Eileen, as a symbol of beauty, delicacy and love; a delphinium to Evan, symbolizing a man of a large sympathies; a purple carnation to Amanda, as a symbol of capriciousness; a hibiscus to Lucas, symbolizing unconditional love he gives to Amanda; a marjoram to Anna, as a symbol of joy and happiness that she endows with all the people around her and a sage flower to Frederick, symbolizing wisdom and respect.

AB: Which part was more difficult for you to write and why?
DN: The most difficult part was the history of Dever, its founding families, old legends and curses. I had to make it all interesting, but not very complicated so the readers wouldn’t lose themselves in all the facts and descriptions.

AB: I brag about this every time I can, but I collect quotes. Tell us three quotes from your first Love Lines novel that you enjoyed writing?
DN: -Christian, saying about Vanessa: “And so it began… First, there was a joint ride for the promised gift, then - lunch in a cafe, then - dinner at a restaurant, a couple of meaningless (at least to me) smiles and kisses and here we are - I pass as her boyfriend!”
-Amanda, saying to Christian: “You're behind the age, Christian! For nearly half a century, no one sends pictures via regular mail, everyone uses the Internet. Have you ever heard about such a thing?!”
- Amanda, saying to Eileen: You know they say, that the brightest stars are shining in the place of your childhood...

AB: I am more than anxious to see what will happen next so at this moment the second book seems so far away. Could you ease us the pain and give us a little sneak peak from Songs of the Wind?
DN: Here you go:) Guess who says the following:

We still didn’t know where Christian was, so we decided to ask some more people for help. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time to find out who those people were. Neither did Amanda, whose father Patrick Fairey together with Frederic were the leaders of our so called searching force. Even our friend Darcy Steward agreed to stay in Dever despite her recent graduation.
“Where is everyone?” wondered Amanda, entering Patrick’s office five minutes later. Her father seemed to be awake day and night, working non-stop and coming up with new ideas of how to find Christian. There was nothing more important to him than saving his son’s life.
“Already coming,” he said, without taking his eyes off the papers he was holding in his hands.
Personally, I had a better question – “Who was coming?”
But before Patrick could say anything else, I felt the vibrations of one familiar aura… or rather two of them! My elder brother Kevin appeared on the threshold. And that was just the first surprise, because next to him I saw Tara Mackenzie…

AB: Please tell me: your favorite book, movie, tv show and song…if that is possible.
DN: There are many books I like, so I can’t name only one:) But I like Lux series by Jenniger L. Armentrout, Richelle Mead’s Vampire Academy, Abbi Glines aWendy Higgins’ books and many others. My favorite movie is “Three meters above the sky”, a TV show Runway and Richard Marx’s song named “Right here waiting”.

AB: Do you have any advice for young authors?
DN: Never give up your dream. If writing makes you happy than write no matter what other people say.

AB: Thank you for making time to answer my questions.
Do you have anything you want to say to all of your fans and not only?
DN: First of all I would like to thank you for such an amazing interview. It was a real pleasure to answer your questions and it was actually the first time I said so much about my Love Lines series:) I hope that my readers will enjoy my books and get as much pleasure as I get every day writing them.  I’ll try not to disappoint you with the next book.

AB: Disappoint? Never. I would be more than happy just to read it and see what happens next.

............................................................................................................................
Here you have the two beautiful covers of the first volume. I can't really choose just one.

Thank you again Diana, I'm glad that you enjoyed my questions. I sure love your answers. I'm jumping up and down because of the sneak peak from Songs of the Wind. Of course I know who that is and I guess we will see more of him in the second book (this makes me want the book more).

Gossip Girl: The Manga (For Your Eyes Only)

Saturday, September 22, 2012
I am not a huge fan of the Gossip Girl books, but I watched and liked the first two seasons of the show and I have a soft-spot for any graphic novel or manga I encounter having as a base  a series that big. I don't know if I would read them, but I guess that putting picture near the story brings it closer to a tv show or cartoon.
Anyway I thought I should share with the true fans of the Gossip Girl series although the news is old since the manga volumes were released in 2010.
Well, here there are. I must say that I simply love the covers:

About the book:
I've started to have dreams while I'm awake. I remember music I've never heard. . . . I've got all this extra stuff in my head, but I'm forgetting things from my own life. I feel like I'm being taken over. One fallen angel walks the earth to bring mankind to its destruction, turning love into hate, forgiveness into blame, and hope into despair.
Through the fires of hell he will come to torment one girl's dreams. Every time Cassie Farrier tries to sleep, she is plagued by visions of a death: A little girl called Zillah. A victim of the holocaust. In desperation Cassie is sent for treatment in an old manor house. There she meets other children just like her. Including Seth, who looks so familiar. Her dream becomes a nightmare—and then reality. This stunning debut from a talented young author contains controversial and thoughtful themes that teenagers can relate to, including bullying and victimization in a contemporary and historical context. With its mix of mythology, fantasy, and real-life terror, this is a book unlike any other.
