Review: The Forever Gate 4 by Isaac Hooke

Thursday, June 27, 2013
"Why do you think they're not hopping to let us through, then? Mentioning the word User used to open so many doors in the past."

At the end of The Forever Gate 3, Isaac Hooke surprised readers with an agonizing cliffhanger: Ari has fallen to her death on the Inside, while three iron golems bear down on Tanner's position on the Outside. Readers were left clamoring for more.

Can Tanner escape in time to complete the mission, or will he join Ari in death?

The Forever Gate 4 is Isaac Hooke's most gripping tale in the Science Fiction and Fantasy saga yet--filled with twists and turns that will keep readers on the edge of their seats.

Strap on in and get ready for the reality-bending ride of your life

My Review:

Is it me or the cliffhangers in this series are becoming more and more painful with each book? I will need to let you know right from the start: there is going to be a spoiler, just a little info you will find out about anyway in the first chapter.

Are you ready? Here it is: Hoodwink is back. I was both ecstatic and sad that he returned, because I knew what he would find. And because I got used to some reactions from characters from other books I expected him to be depressed and take his time mourning, but it was exactly the opposite: he was more determined to fight even if he was hurt. Hoodwink, just like Ari makes some harsh decisions, but somehow his are more calculated and he always succeeds in a fight. I guess that’s why really like him. He is smart and strong and it’s obvious that he is special, meant for a greater plan.

Meanwhile on the Inside things have gotten darker like it’s preparing us for an epic ending and Hoodwink’s plan seems to go in that direction. New characters, but also old ones are introduced and more unfortunate events descend upon them and what I did appreciate was that in the middle of a fight none of the characters stopped to explain this and that. Every time Tanner had a question about anything, Hoodwink not once stopped to fully answer. In some of the cases, the mystery is still there, probably awaiting for the Forever Gate 5. Why I mentioned this? Because I’ve seen cases in which in the middle of a fight a character would start a very long monologue or discussion with someone else. Like you can take all the time in the world to chat when someone swings a sword at you.

"You bring her back, Hoodwink, you hear? I don't care if you have to break apart this world or the next, the nine hells or the afterlife. Destroy it all. But you bring— her— back."

Overall The Forever Gate 4 was a book filled with regret, sadness, madness, death, but also bravery, sacrifice and for some characters like Cora, rediscovering. In this book I felt like for a brief moment we got to see the real Cora, the mother and the wife.

Of course Mr. Isaac Hooke left us with yet another cliffhanger. I guess it’s better if you directly buy the Compendium Edition, because if you are a fan of SF, you will most definitely love the world created in The Forever Gate series.

Review: Impostor by Susanne Winnacker

Wednesday, June 26, 2013
"And now I was supposed to pose as someone else’s daughter, become a part of a normal family, which was the last thing I knew how to pretend."

Can Tessa pose as Madison . . . and stop a killer before it’s too late?

Tessa is a Variant, able to absorb the DNA of anyone she touches and mimic their appearance. Shunned by her family, she’s spent the last two years training with the Forces with Extraordinary Abilities, a secret branch of the FBI. When a serial killer rocks a small town in Oregon, Tessa is given a mission: she must impersonate Madison, a local teen, to find the killer before he strikes again.

Tessa hates everything about being an impostor—the stress, the danger, the deceit—but loves playing the role of a normal girl. As Madison, she finds friends, romance, and the kind of loving family she’d do anything to keep. Amid action, suspense, and a ticking clock, this super-human comes to a very human conclusion: even a girl who can look like anyone struggles the most with being herself.

My Review:

I knew I will like Impostor, but I didn’t expect to love it. At first glance this book doesn’t bring anything new and I expected something along the X-Men lines (this being the main reason I needed to read it). Variants are people with extraordinary abilities, working for FEA, a secret branch of the FBI. When normal officers can’t do the job, FEA is required, which is the case when a serial killer appears in Oregon.

What was different about Impostor is that it was not a love story with a couple of supernatural things in it. The main story is constructed around the mission Tessa has and yes, there is also a love interest after she occasionally sobs, but most of the time she is busy with discovering herself and Madison, the dead girl she must replace.

Tessa is considered to be the ultimate weapon, but she doesn’t feel like that. She can absorb someone else’s DNA and then change in that person. I do think she is a valuable Variant, but I can’t go that far saying that she is the ultimate weapon, not from the first book anyway. She is strong and smart and she makes a great detective for someone her age. Aside from her abilities, she is pretty much a normal teenager, confused about her identity, while getting closer to the family of Madison. She is numerous times conflicted about her mission, but has her moments in which she embraces the fact that she may be Madison.

Alec is mysterious, posing as unavailable, almost cold at times. He is that kind of character that tries to keep his calm being all serious, but has those moments when he slightly shows on the outside what he feels. He is certainly in love with Tessa, but tries not to do so (failing). I kind of hate him for how he toys with her. Kissing a girl while being with another? Not cool.

The love story
Here is what I liked about this part: they have a history. There was not a matter of love at first sight, because Tessa and Alec had a normal relationship, evolving like it should from being friends to being more. Here is the weird thing: at this point I don’t want them together and that is maybe because of Alec. And I like them when they are just friends.

“You always do that, you know,” Alec said.
I swallowed a gummy bear. “Do what?”
“Bite their heads off first.”
I shrugged. “It’s the nice thing to do. If you could choose, would you rather be eaten alive starting at your feet or would you want it to be over quickly?”

Holly is the crazy best friend and the one tom come with most of the “great” ideas that are more probable to go wrong. Because the mission took place far away from the FEA quarters, we get to see very little of Holly, but she is the one I hope we will get to see more in the second book.

And now about my favorite character. Don’t ask me why, but I like Kate. I may have a soft spot for bitchy characters. She is mean and possessive when it comes to Alec, but I feel like there is more behind her behavior. She is definitely strong and brave even though her ability is not that useful.

The Villain
Oh that was fun. I tried to guess the killer the entire book. FEA had a list of suspects and every one of them seemed to be it. Nope, I am not good as a detective, but hey Tessa find out right before she was hit by the killer so I don’t feel that bad. Great mystery story, very well constructed with secrets here and there. It reminded me of a tv show with cops. I simply loved it.
