Review: Die for me by Amy Plum

Sunday, May 26, 2013

In the City of Lights, two star-crossed lovers battle a fate that is destined to tear them apart again and again for eternity.

When Kate Mercier's parents die in a tragic car accident, she leaves her life--and memories--behind to live with her grandparents in Paris. For Kate, the only way to survive her pain is escaping into the world of books and Parisian art. Until she meets Vincent.

Mysterious, charming, and devastatingly handsome, Vincent threatens to melt the ice around Kate's guarded heart with just his smile. As she begins to fall in love with Vincent, Kate discovers that he's a revenant--an undead being whose fate forces him to sacrifice himself over and over again to save the lives of others. Vincent and those like him are bound in a centuries-old war against a group of evil revenants who exist only to murder and betray. Kate soon realizes that if she follows her heart, she may never be safe again.
Where to buy: Die for Me by Amy Plum

My Review:

I initially wanted to post this review in the zombie challenge because I started it with the thought that this book is about zombies. I still don’t know what to think about this since the revenants consider themselves zombies, but honestly I thought that they are a new kind of creatures: undead, fated to sacrifice themselves in order to save lives of the others. I guess you can throw them under the zombie category, but I like more the idea of a new creature.

"Well, I'm glad we're starting with the easy questions," he said, stretching his powerful arms and then leaning toward me. "The answer would be ... because we're zombies!" and he let out a horrible groan, stretching his mouth open and baring his teeth as he curled his hands into claws.

Seeing my terrified expression, Ambrose began cracking up and slapping his knee with his hand. "Just kidding," he cackled, and then, calming down, looked at me sedately. "But no, seriously. We're zombies."

"We are not zombies!" said Charlotte, her voice rising with annoyance.”

They are immortal and become that way after their death. They are alive and they grow old until they die again due to sacrifice. Then they reset and go back to the age they had when they first died. PS: they don’t decompose and they don’t feel the urge to eat human flash.

Revenants must stay hidden, but one day Kate enters in their life as a romantic interest for one of them. I can’t say that she was my favorite character from the book, at least not at first, but she changed visibly towards the end. From the insecure and depressed girl, she ended up all confident, brave and motivated to help the revenants and I like this kind of evolution in a character. Also I loved her relationship with her sister, Georgia. They talked about anything (except the supernatural part) and they seemed really close. I am eager to see how things evolve between the two now that the secrets are out (this is one reason for which I need to read the second book).

The relationship
The relationship between Kate and Vincent seemed to move a little fast or I wasn’t paying attention to the time line (this happens to me sometimes), but it was sweet and romantic and I am not usually a sucker for love stories. Die for Me had combined the love story with the revenant’s history and you may watch this volume as an introduction into a new paranormal world.

“He leaned forward and opened his door, politely standing aside to let me by before following me in. There are some advantages to dating a guy from another era, I thought. Though I am a big believer in gender equality, chivalry scores high in my book.”

Well, even though I liked Kate and Vincent, I loved Charlotte and Jules. Vincent is serious and romantic, but Jules is funny and flirty and much more active. I don’t really know how to explain, but if they were movies then Vincent would be a romantic one with a spice of drama and Jules would be an action packed movie with a lot of comedy. Well, I like comedies and action movies more.

I'm a revenant, not a vampire, chérie. ~ Vincent Delacroix

And Charlotte, I think she was sweet and caring. She looked, but also acted like a teenager even though she is pretty old.

The Villain
Die for Me didn’t have that much action and the villain didn’t seem THE VILLAIN for a long time. Still I have to give him credits for the way he planned to attack the revenants, but besides that he didn’t stood out that much.

Overall, I wished we could have seen more of the other revenants, but I am sure that Die for Me was built more as an introductory novel and the others will bring more. More Jules, more action and more Georgia and I honestly can’t wait to read it.

PS: I loved loved loved all the descriptions of Paris and I actually tried to follow up some  locations on Google Maps.

Crash - Episode One - Available July 2013
Chris’s life of luxury is gone, devastated by the collapse of the European economy. Gas, water, and electricity are all cut off. Food is running out. Even his wife and daughter have gone. Huddled in the smallest room of their lavish house with his petrified and dirty eight-year-old son, Chris has made the decision to stay put. A small army of psychotic scavengers is outside, hell-bent on making the once-privileged pay. Chris now knows that not leaving when he had the option was the worst decision of his life.

Cowering in his home, he watches as his neighbours are dragged into the street and brutally executed. The scavengers have one more house to go, and then it will be his turn. He has to act fast, or he and his son will meet the same fate.

Driven by the need to survive, Chris has decided to keep secrets from his son. Secrets that will make all of the events up until this point seem trivial. Secrets that, one way or another, will come out before the day is done.
