Review: Downpour (Ember #2) by Madison Daniel

Wednesday, February 13, 2013
Programul complet al Blog Tour-ului il gasiti aici.
They wanted us all. The fire starter, the rainmaker, and the new little healer. I should have seen this sooner.

A little sister lost.

A family tree withered.

A journey to save the past.

Max Valentine is a walking supernova.
On the run and searching for answers, his light darkens.
Dark skies on the horizon make his next chapter ominous.
His powers are fading but still he pushes toward the storm.
Embers still burn but can he survive this one truth... is eternal but the heart is not.
Where to buy: Downpour (Ember #2) by Madison Daniel

My Review:

I am just a little bit confused with what to say and what not about Downpour. The thing is that more than half of it involves a huge spoiler and I can’t talk about certain parts without revealing it. I will try anyway.

What on earth was with that ending? I am not saying that everything went well until that point, but the last part came all of a sudden with no warning with nothing. While I was reading the last chapters I expected someone to die, but I did not expect that. Let me tell you this: I finished the book, I read the last part and I was shocked, then I read it again because it was late, I was sleepy and I thought that I might not understand English anymore. The next day I read it again because I thought that I dreamed it, but no…that character was still dead.

Anyway, moving along to the beginning.

In the end of Ember Max took off, he went after Asia and to find strength to forgive himself for his past, but Downpour is settled somewhere in the future. A couple of months have passed since Max was on the way and after a long time alone he decided to search for Asia, who still believed that he was dead. That small part in which he was with Asia was a dream, and yes, this is the third book in a row that has mentioned in it Paris. I did not expect it to last of course since there was the cliffhanger from Ember to be resolved.

After a small trip around the world, mainly because of Asia, Max had to go home and there is where things started to go crazy. He found his uncle sick for a few months, Sam had moved on and Kai really pissed off. Even though he spent his time with Asia he hasn’t forgot Sam.

Max’s feelings
They are pretty much confusing and he is doing a great job confusing me as well. I get him a little. Asia and Sam are different, but each of them has something that makes them strong and appealing. We will get there soon.
"But as angry as I was at Sam, I was even angrier with myself. I deserved this pain. I had earned it."
Max has moments when he seems more mature, but every time Sam and Asia are in the same room he freaks out. He is afraid that they might kill each other and those are the moments he simply doesn’t know what to do.

He is the one that always tries to makes things right. He is calm and soothing, even in his state. When Max, Asia, Sam and Kai are in the room, he is the only one that makes them connect and he even breaks Asia’s walls down.

Asia and Sam - This should be fun.
It all started with Asia, and I thought that Max has finally made his choice, but it was way too early and she made me hate her a little. She became selfish and didn’t tell Max the most important thing that she knew that will concern him.
The moment Max meet Sam I liked the fact that she moved on and it seemed that she tried and maybe succeeded in forgetting, just a little, Max. And I was proud of her, until she realized that the feelings are still there. Once again I thought that the choice was made by Sam, who was involved in a relationship.
Passing along the fact that both girls were still in love with Max, I enjoyed the fact that they both grew stronger. Asia’s supernatural powers were now under control and she learned how to use them in all kind of new ways. Sam also grew stronger in her normal human way, she had moments when she was more confident and determined and she had one solid reason (that's the spoiler part - I'm sorry, but you'll need to read the book for that).
The relationship between them moved from anger and frustration to trust in the end. Sam trusted Asia with her most precious thing and Asia was ready to sacrifice her love for Max, letting him to be happy with Sam. And I liked that. They both changed and let away their feelings of hate until the point in which they protected each other.
“Come on Max...what’s that saying...if you love something...” her voice broke a little.
“Let it free,” I finished for her.
-Asia & Max-

Poor poor Kai. He was furious with Max when he returned; he tried to run him over with the car and then saved his life. They were best friends again, but things were different and Max kind of betrayed him ... again. That was not nice, but he still managed to remain a good friend for all of them

The Villains. Powerful, motivated and scary.
There were at least three main villains and one of them was Lucy and her motivation was revenge. There were also two more, new character and they were after Asia and Max’s powers. Their secret was out and dangerous men now want them for their unique abilities.
“I miss high school,” I said with a sore breath.
“These real world bullies hurt!” I coughed. He patted me on the back.

What I really loved in this book was the fight scenes and there were many. I really liked the way they were described and the way I could easily visualize the display of power from both Asia and Max.

"Nothing but the absolute power that I had always tried to hold back. I had let go before but never like this. I was a newborn star. A violent supernova. I was a walking reckoning. I was their end."

And just to keep you relaxed: don’t worry there is not a cliffhanger, there at least three so bye bye now, I'll go and wait for Book 3.

Creatura Blog Tour

Welcome, I've been expecting you! First of all I want to thank Nely for inviting me to take part at this amazing Blog Tour. It is the first one, at least international. So I choose to delight you with a small review, so that you know how much I liked Creatura by Nely Cab and a few of my many favorite quotes from it. And if you are patient you will find a rafflecopter widget where you will have the chance to win a handful of prizes.

There there, now it begins.

When seventeen year-old Isis Martin is having trouble sleeping due to perturbing dreams of a horrific growling beast, she decides to confront her fear. But what Isis discovers is something other than a menacing entity. The human-like creature offers Isis assurance that he is not a figment of her imagination. Unwilling to accept his avowal, Isis sets his words to contest by asking the entity to prove himself - a dare, he readily welcomes. It is in her dreams that Isis innocently stumbles upon the silent existence of the divine lineage of those that man has long forgotten. In a quaint town, deep in south Texas, this story leads Isis onto the path of impermissible love and captivating life-changing truths. Ultimately, Isis discovers that this chapter in her life is only the beginning.

My reviw:
Finally, my very first book in which the two thousand years guy, really acts and talks like a young man of his age, in love with a girl that is actually intelligent not that that clumsy. I can see the reason of the attraction between the two.
As I said before, some YA books follow a certain pattern that has been transformed into plain cliché, that sometimes make me roll my eyes when reading. I really enjoy reading books that have original ideas, and Creatura is that kind of book.
This is a love story, a forbidden love story between a mortal and a deity, a struggle in which Isis tries not to fall in love and David tries to make it work despite the rules that stops him to be with her. Trust me, you will be surprised from the begging until the end of the book. The dialogue is smart and David's poems and way of taking reminds me of Shakespeare. I was never a big fan of Shakespeare (mainly because of a teacher that was obsessed with him and kind of tortured us with his works to 3 years), but Nely made me miss Shakespeare and after finishing Creatura I felt the need to re-read some of his works. David's talking stile really makes you believe that  he indeed had a certain old-school education. He has respect for his family and Isis, or any other woman. (Isis mother was charmed by him from the first encounter (^-^) ).
Isis on the other hand is strong and independent and from another "FINALLY" category, she and her mother get along, they are friends and take care of each other, a rare to find thing in YA novels. I find really sweet the relationship with her mother, because that is how a mother-daughter life should work when a father is not there. They only have each other and they know that, that's why they don't lie and are very opened in discutions.
The story also has a little bit of action (just against mortals), but after I've read the ending (OMG that ending) of it I am pretty sure that that the second book will explode with adventures and new places that will live you breathless (just like it happened with the first one).
I have so many things to tell you, but those are all spoilers so I will be silence right now, just trust me, this book is great with gods, half-gods, a forbidden love story and a small town.
Oh and BTW: this time, the really hot guys actually have solid reasons to be...well hot....they are freaking gods. (^_^)

The Quotes(I have this journal in which I write my favorite quotes from books, and after reading Creatura I nearly brought another journal):
"Do you find pleasure in my fear?"
"Tear me apart if you want, but you will haunt me no more!"
"Carefoul, I'm lethal."
"A kiss, such as this, would look divine on thy lips."
"You will be the death of me. I swear it."
"Give me agony or give me death, I'll take thy heart as eternal breath."
"I beg you to abnegate me because, I don't have the strength to renounce you."
"Your lips are both venom and nectar combined."
"Dear, dear girl...I'm lost without you and lost with you as well. A lost cause is what I am."
"I am both more than human and less than human."
