Zombie Apocalypse Challenge #5 - Anime Review: Highschool of the Dead

Friday, March 29, 2013
"On the day everything came to an end, I killed my best friend, and held the girl I loved for the first time."

 Highschool of the Dead

A mysterious, lethal disease is on the loose worldwide, resulting in a catastrophic death rate of humanity, and the increasing rise of attacks, caused by the living dead.

In Japan, several high school students and a school nurse have banded together to escape Fujimi High School shortly after it was attacked by zombies. The group now attempts to figure who or what was responsible for this plague, and in the meantime, attempt to survive the present apocalypse.

The story is initially narrated through the eyes of Takashi Komuro, one of the students who had survived in the initial outbreak.
My Review:

I finished Highschool of the dead in a couple of days and that is because this anime was so addictive. It was the first and only anime with zombies I heard of and I loved it. I also plan to read the manga since what is was released in anime version was just a part of the story and it has a long way until it properly ends.

It’s a little hard to place this anime in under just one category. It had drama, horror, action and comedy. It is not that I didn’t enjoy the comedy part, but it bothered me a little that the parts in which nudity was not necessary. I have nothing against ecchi in anime, but I think that Highschool of the Dead would have been scarier and would have been taken more serious if there were less breasts or panty sights.

Other than this I liked the story, it was a classical zombie story, somehow predictable. The zombie apocalypse bursts out in the middle of an ordinary day and in a matter of minutes creatures are literary everywhere. Panicked students try to run for their life, but just a few are skilled enough to fight them. I was shocked on how fast the world has come to an end, but I guess that in the case of a virus like that is normal.

The graphic was great and the action scenes well done. The part that was not realistic at all, although I liked a lot (I am full of contradictions), was that in which everyone had a useful skill. Everyone in the group seemed to be good at something; they all of a sudden knew what to do in case of a zombie invasion. So here we have Takashi Komuro, the bad-ass leader and the hottest guy in the group that every girl has fallen for, Rei Miyamoto, the damsel in distress, but only at times because she is pretty good when she needs to fight the zombies.

Saeko Busujima might be my favorite character from this series. I really liked her background story and the darkness behind her fights. I don’t have enough words to tell you how cool she was. I would watch the entire show just because of her and I think that she is the one with witch Takashi should end up.

"It made me feel good to make him suffer! After realizing I had the overwhelming upper hand with my wooden sword, his frightened movements seemed inviting... I attacked without any hesitation!"

Saya Takagi is actually the brain in the group, a little annoying and not at all useful in stressful situations.  Kohta Hirano my second favorite character and that is not because he is just funny, but I love what they’ve done with him. How he suddenly transforms from the scared geek into a gun expert, which is totally opposed from how he’s usually.

"Without guns, I...I'll go back to what I was! I'm done with the old me! I thought I'd found something I was good at!"

Shizuka Marikawa was the weird part of this anime. Yep, not the zombies, but her. She is weird. She is a nurse which I guess is useful in that kind of situation, except in case someone gets bitten. I don’t think I ever saw her taking care of anyone. She is supposed to be the adult in the group although she is anything but responsible. I guess that she was useful as a driver.

I am still hoping for a second season and see the end of the story.
And I'll leave you with an AMV I simply love. Enjoy

 Highschool of the Dead

For those that don’t know already, anime are cartoons, but not all of them are suitable for children. Not if you want them to have nightmares. Highschool of the dead is really disturbing with all the zombies and blood and like many of the respectable anime around there they have light nudity. So nope, no, no way…not for children.
I actually wanted to see this anime for a while now and I managed to watch the first episode and I think I like it. I like the concept:
The zombie apocalypse seems to start out of nowhere and a couple of walkers enter in a school killing everyone, except a couple of students that were smart or strong enough to survive. I am guessing now, but I think that most of the action will be settled in the high school surrounded by zombies. I got the chance to watch a couple of AMV and the action scenes are really good.
So if you are an anime fan with an undying love for zombies or at least for disturbing, bloody things I recommend you to watch it.
